Machine transformer successfully retrofitted

At the beginning of 2024, we were commissioned to retrofit a 450 MVA machine transformer with a short-circuit-proof tertiary winding. Thanks to rapid analysis, clear planning and pragmatic implementation, the retrofit was completed on schedule and in accordance with standards.

Project objective and challenge

The primary objective was to retrofit the transformer in accordance with standards and make it short-circuit-proof without jeopardising the already planned commissioning period. The challenge was complex:

  • Extremely short lead time, leaving little room for delays
  • Immediate availability of all necessary materials, spare parts and specialised personnel
  • Ensuring standard-compliant implementation, taking into account high electrical loads and safety standards

In many projects, speed determines success – in this case, it was just as critical as technical precision.

Our approach

Our approachOur team acted consistently, in a structured yet flexible manner. First, a quick but detailed assessment of the situation was carried out directly on site: What work was necessary? What risks had to be minimised? What materials were available, and which had to be procured at short notice?

At the same time, all the necessary components were ordered immediately and delivered within a very short time. Thanks to close coordination between procurement, planning and on-site operations, we were able to start implementation immediately.

The retrofit itself required technical sensitivity: each step was carefully checked for compliance with standards and short-circuit resistance. Our approach combined sound engineering planning with pragmatic action to maximise efficiency – without compromising on quality or safety.

Successful completion

The project was successfully completed, and the results speak for themselves:

  • The machine transformer was retrofitted on schedule and in accordance with standards to be short-circuit proof.
  • The originally planned commissioning period was met without delays.
  • The customer was highly satisfied with our fast, efficient and practical implementation.

This project impressively demonstrates that we can deliver stable, technically flawless solutions even under extreme time pressure – without compromising on quality.

Conclusion

The short-circuit-proof retrofitting of a tertiary winding on a 450 MVA transformer shows that flexibility, quick decision-making and sound technical expertise are crucial to successfully overcoming challenges in energy infrastructure. With a clear plan, optimal coordination and the targeted deployment of our experienced team, we were able to efficiently resolve a complex situation while ensuring the project’s success for our customer.
